Planning a trip to Challis, Idaho, or just looking for local information? Weโ€™ve put together this FAQ to help answer the most common questions we receive about our area โ€“ including where to stay, where to eat, and what to do. General Information

Challis is located in central Idaho, nestled in the Salmon River Valley along Highway 93. It is the gateway to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and a hub for outdoor recreation.
Challis is a year-round destination! Summer is great for river rafting, hiking, and events like Braun Brothers Reunion. Fall offers stunning foliage and hunting opportunities, while winter is perfect for snowmobiling and soaking in hot springs. Spring is ideal for wildlife viewing and fishing.

Challis experiences all four seasons. Summers are warm with highs in the 80s-90sยฐF, while winters can be cold with occasional snowfall. Spring and fall offer mild temperatures and scenic beauty.

Yes! There are several campgrounds in the Challis National Forest, near the Salmon River, and within Land of the Yankee Fork State Park.

During the summer, you can find other local vendors at the Challis Community Farmerโ€™s Markets, which take place every Saturday from 10AM โ€“ 1PM at the City Park.

  • Challis Hot Springs โ€“ Soak in natural mineral pools.
  • Salmon River โ€“ Rafting, fishing, and scenic views.
  • Bayhorse Ghost Town โ€“ A preserved mining town with hiking trails.
  • Custer Motorway Adventure Road โ€“ A scenic backroad with historical stops.
Hikers can find an abundance of trails and tracks to explore in our area, from extreme elevations to leisurely walks. Some of the most popular trails around the Challis area include the Boulder Chain Lakes & Big Horn Crags: Reflection Lake, Yankee Fork, and Mt Borah. Mt Borah, according to some, is considered a challenging hike, whereas others refer to it as an easy walk. Check out our hiking page for more information on local hikes as well as area maps.
The Salmon River and surrounding lakes (such as Bayhorse Lake and Mosquito Flat Reservoir) offer excellent fishing for trout, steelhead, and salmon.
Yes! Challis Hot Springs is a popular destination with developed pools, while more remote, natural hot springs can be found in the surrounding wilderness.

  • River of No Return Endurance Run (June) โ€“ A mountain trail run featuring three different distances – 29k, 53k, or 108k.

Transportation & Services

Cell service is available in town but can be limited in remote areas. Always check coverage maps before heading into the wilderness.
