Fishing

The scenic areas around Challis provide the perfect location for either the beginner or the seasoned angler to try their hand at catching a variety of fish. The crystal clear Salmon River and its tributaries are home to rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout, as well as whitefish. Fall migration of steelhead from the Pacific begins a long fishing season which lasts through spring. The Salmon River is home to threatened and endangered sockeye and chinook salmon as well as bull trout, also known as Dolly Varden. These species are protected from fishing; however, in late summer look for salmon spawning in the river.

High mountain lakes such as Bayhorse Lakes and Mosquito Flats Reservoir are just a short drive from Challis. Pristine high mountain lakes guarded by mountain peaks require some hiking to reach, but the trip is well worth your effort. There are also opportunities for ice fishing at Mackay Reservoir and Jimmy Smith Lake.

If your seeking a place where the younger ones can be successful at fishing, take your kids to the Blue Mountain pond in Challis. Watch their eyes light up as they land a feisty steelhead or rainbow trout in this stocked pond by the Challis golf course.

The Challis area has some of the most beautiful waterways and scenic areas to challenge your fishing skills, or just to provide a relaxing environment for the whole family.
