Hikers can find an abundance of trails and tracks to explore in our area, from extreme elevations to leisurely walks. Some of the most popular trails around the Challis area include the Boulder Chain Lakes & Big Horn Crags: Reflection Lake, Yankee Fork, and Mt Borah. Mt Borah, according to some, is considered a challenging hike, whereas others refer to it as an easy walk.

For the adventure seeker, Challis is the perfect base camp for hiking 6 of Idaho’s peaks that are 12,000 ft or higher. Fondly call the 12’ers, Mt Borah, Leatherman Peak, Mount Church, Mount Breitenbach, Mount Idaho and Donaldson Peak are all located in Custer County.

The Bighorn Crags in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness has some of the most majestic mountain peaks and pristine alpine lakes you will see, most are fully accessible by hiking.

The Bayhorse Ghost Town is a loop trail almost a mile with only light traffic and is great for all skill levels. Other great trails include the Pahsimeroi Valley trails and the highly acclaimed Yankee Fork has endless beautiful paths and vistas for every preference and capability.
