Friday Feature: Clayton Area Historical Society T Friday Feature: Clayton Area Historical Society

Tucked away in the heart of Idahoโ€™s mining country, the Clayton Area Historical Society preserves the rich legacy of a town built on silver, sweat, and stories. Housed in the historic 1880s-era schoolhouse, the museum offers a glimpse into the boomtown days when Clayton thrived as a hub for smelting operations and frontier life.

Step inside and explore fascinating exhibits on local mining history, vintage tools, schoolhouse artifacts, and the everyday lives of early settlers. Passionate volunteers work hard to maintain and share the stories that shaped this unique corner of the Salmon River Canyon.

Whether youโ€™re a history buff or just passing through on the scenic Highway 75, a stop at the Clayton museum is a must. Open seasonally, itโ€™s a testament to the communityโ€™s commitment to remembering the past and celebrating local heritage.

Plan your visit this summer and take a step back in time with the Clayton Area Historical Society!

Weโ€™re proud to announce Howard Cutler as the Gra Weโ€™re proud to announce Howard Cutler as the Grand Marshal of this yearโ€™s 4th of July Parade! Heโ€™ll be riding in style with Zella in a horse-drawn buggy as we honor his incredible legacy and lifelong dedication to Challis.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

In the heart of Challis, Idaho, where Highway 75 winds through ranchland and mountain views, youโ€™ll find a name thatโ€™s become deeply rooted in local tradition: Howard Cutler.

Howardโ€™s story begins right here in Challis, where he attended Challis High School in the 1950s and has remained a steadfast part of the community ever since. With over five decades of dedication to the land, Howard has operated a beef cattle business just south of town, building a quiet legacy of hard work, integrity, and connection to the land. His ranch, established in 1970, has become a longstanding part of the local agricultural fabric.

But Howardโ€™s impact doesnโ€™t end at the ranch gate. He played a crucial role in the development of the North Custer Rodeo Grounds, volunteering time, loaning heavy equipment, and stepping up as president of the rodeo board during pivotal years. His leadership and hands-on efforts helped shape the grounds into the beloved local venue we know today. A place where generations gather to celebrate rodeo heritage, community pride, and Idaho grit.

Howard's family roots also run deep in Challis. Public records show ties to several generations of the Cutler family, with many still calling the area home. Whether through family, ranching, or his commitment to community projects like the rodeo grounds, Howardโ€™s presence continues to shape and reflect the values of small-town Idaho life.

From rancher to rodeo leader, neighbor to friend, Howard Cutler is a living chapter in the story of Challis, and weโ€™re proud to shine a light on his lasting contributions to our community.
