MT BORAH

Towering at 12,662 feet, Mount Borah (also known as Borah Peak) is Idaho’s tallest mountain and a bucket-list destination for serious hikers, climbers, and mountain lovers. Located in the Lost River Range, about an hour southeast of Challis, this iconic peak draws adventurers from all over the region who come to test themselves on its rugged slopes and take in the breathtaking alpine views.

The most popular route to the summit is the Southwest Ridge, commonly referred to as the Borah Trail. It’s a steep and strenuous climb with over 5,000 feet of elevation gain, and it includes the infamous “Chicken Out Ridge” – a narrow, rocky section that requires scrambling and a good head for heights. Reaching the summit is a challenging and rewarding experience that offers panoramic views of the Lost River and Lemhi ranges.

For those who prefer to admire Borah from below, the surrounding areas provide excellent opportunities for photography, picnicking, and wildlife watching. The mountain is especially striking at sunrise or sunset, when its rocky ridges glow in the light.

From Challis, take Highway 93 south for about 52 miles. Turn left onto the Mount Borah Access Road (look for the sign near the Borah Campground) and follow it to the trailhead. The road is typically accessible during the late spring through fall months.
