TWIN PEAKS LOOKOUT
For unbeatable panoramic views of the Salmon River Valley and the surrounding mountain ranges, a trip to Twin Peaks Lookout is a must. Located high above Challis, this former Forest Service fire lookout offers a unique perspective on the rugged beauty of Central Idaho, and itโs one of the best spots around for photography, picnicking, and watching the sunset.
The drive to the top winds through forested hills and open ridges, eventually leading to the summit, where the historic lookout tower still stands. Though no longer staffed, the site retains its charm and provides sweeping 360-degree views of the Lost River, Lemhi, and Salmon River mountain ranges. On a clear day, you can even see Mount Borah on the horizon.
Wildflowers bloom along the roadside in early summer, and fall brings golden aspens and crisp mountain air. The lookout is typically accessible by vehicle in late spring through fall, depending on snow conditions, and the last stretch of road may be rough or narrow, so high-clearance vehicles are recommended.
From town, head up Main Street and turn left onto Challis Creek Road. Follow it for about 20 miles โ follow the signs up to the summit.
