MINES
The hills and mountains surrounding Challis are rich with stories of gold, silver, and the determined prospectors who came in search of fortune. Exploring the local mines is a great way to connect with this part of Idahoโs heritage, and there are several places in the area where you can see mining history up close.
Just a short drive from town, the Yankee Fork Mining District offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. Visit the ghost towns of Custer and Bonanza, where weathered buildings and historical signage bring the gold rush era to life. Stop by the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge, a massive mechanical relic that once churned through river gravel in search of gold. Many of these sites include interpretive trails and self-guided tours, with exhibits maintained by the Land of the Yankee Fork State Park.
For a more immersive experience, consider a guided tour or panning demonstration when available during the summer season. Mining shaped this region and it continues to be a source of local pride and curiosity.
Getting There: From Challis, take Highway 75 south for about 8 miles, then turn onto Yankee Fork Road. Follow the signs toward the dredge and historic townsites of Custer and Bonanza. Roads are generally accessible from late spring through early fall.
