CUSTER MOTORWAY

Step back in time with a drive along the Custer Motorway, a 100-mile historic byway that follows the rugged path of 19th-century miners and freight wagons. Originally used to transport goods between the towns of Challis and the once-booming mining town of Custer, this backcountry route is now a favorite for history buffs, off-road adventurers, and anyone looking to explore Idaho’s wild past.

Along the way, you’ll pass remnants of old stage stops, log cabins, cemeteries, and interpretive signs that tell the story of the area’s gold rush days. The route winds through forested hillsides, creek crossings, and scenic mountain views, making it a journey that’s as beautiful as it is educational. Keep an eye out for wildlife and wildflowers, especially in the spring and early summer.

The road is best suited for high-clearance or 4WD vehicles, and travel is typically recommended from late June through early fall, depending on snow conditions.

From town, take Main Street all the way up until it turns into Garden Creek Road. Follow it for about 4 miles until it forks. Take the right fork and follow the signs as the road winds into the mountains toward the historic townsites of Bonanza and Custer.
