SCENIC ROUTES
If you’re looking to soak in the stunning beauty of Central Idaho, there’s no better way than by hitting the road. The Challis area is surrounded by dramatic peaks, winding rivers, and wide-open rangeland – all connected by scenic drives that make the journey just as rewarding as the destination.
Start with the Salmon River Scenic Byway, which runs right through Challis along Highway 75. This route follows the legendary Salmon River – often called “The River of No Return” – and offers breathtaking views of the river canyon, pine-covered hills, and rugged cliffs. Wildlife sightings are common, and there are plenty of pullouts for photos, fishing access, or a quiet moment to take it all in.
For those who like to get off the beaten path, the Custer Motorway leads you deep into Idaho’s mining history. This gravel route winds past ghost towns, crumbling cabins, and historic interpretive signs that bring the stories of the Old West to life. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, and the drive is best in late spring through early fall.
Other favorite routes include Pahsimeroi Road for its sweeping views of the Lost River Range and Garden Creek Road for a peaceful drive through cottonwoods and rolling pastureland. No matter which direction you go, you’re bound to find beauty, solitude, and a few surprises along the way.
